Hi. I have heard Eva talk about essential oils a few times on her show, and I am interested in using them, but I'm not sure of the correct usage and which one is used for.  I saw them today in a health store and wanted to buy some, but wanted to ask first.

Thanks to anyone who answers.

Hi Berneda,

Most health food stores will have a manager or employee with a great knowledge of essential oils. I could certainly recommend something for you- could you let me know how you’re planning to use them? For aromatherapy or directly on the skin/face? Are there any specific issues you are looking to address? I hope to hear from you soon!

Best wishes,
Eva
Hi Eva. Thank you for getting back to me. The store that I found the essential oils don't have experts working there to answer the essential oils questions. I would love if you could help me though. I would use them for aromatherapy to address depression, anxiety and PMS. I've been on anti-depressants for years and they do not help and I don't like taking chemicals as it is. I've read that saturating a cotton ball or a hankerchief and sniff it throughout the day would do the trick. Is that true? Thanks so much for your help. I love your show.
Berneda,

Bergamont oil is the best for depression- the tip about soaking a cotton ball is great, and you should also try putting a drop on your pulse points for all day relief. Holy Basil is absolutely wonderful for anxiety and starts working right away. I think the two of these in combination will also relieve some of your PMS symptoms. I hope these tips help you out.

Best of luck!
Hi Eva. I've read that 100% pure oils are not good to put on the skin. Also, I am currently on anti-depressants. My primary doctor plus a lot of other doctors don't have information on essential oils so they are not much help. Thank you for all your help.
Berneda,

That is true; there are extremely few oils that can be applied directly to the skin. Many essential oils are diluted when you buy them. Generally it's 2.5% of the therapeutic oil in a carrier oil. Be sure to check the directions for use before applying any oil.

Best,
Eva

Hi, Berneda!

I'm a certified aromatherapist.  I will just offer you some hints.  Use quality oils.  Don't buy them from a grocery store or department store.  Even many health foods stores don't carry quality oils.  I can recommend Oshadhi oils.  www.oshadhiusa.com  I do not make money on aromatherapy.  I use the oils for everything from cleaning my house to usng a bed spray to making bug repellant!  (I used to have an aromatherapy business, but no longer do.)  Three books I recommend are "The Aromatheapy Book" by Jeanne Rose. "The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy" by Valerie Ann Worwood.
"The World of Aromatherapy" by Jeanne Rose and Susan Earle.  There are many, many oils that work for depression, PMS and anxiety.  It's just a matter of finding your favorite scent!  You mix the oils with a carrier oil, maybe 30 drops (10 of one, 10 of another 10 of another) with a few tablespoons of jojoba oil or cream or in your bath.  you can use the cotton ball, tissue, in a diffuser in your home.  tons of things to do with these beautiful oils!

Thank you so much for your comments.  My main reason would be depression, PMS and anxiety, and I want to stop my medication. So it doesn't matter what scent I use and combine it with the oil or moisturizer to the body?

Correct.  But the best way would be to inhale it through a diffuser or a cotton ball or tissue.  I'd recommend basil,  Bergamot, chamomile, frankincense, geranium, orange, clary sage or rosemary for your depression.  Using the clary sage and geranium in a moisturizer or oil is great for your PMS symptoms.  Rub it over your ovary area.

Now, obviously, I'm not a physician, and it seems that since you are taking medications that you probably have been diagnosed with depression.  I would talk to your doctor first before stopping your medications or try to wean yourself off of them.  Personally, I don't like medications either, BUT if they helped me and I was a happier person than w/out them, I'd never stop taking them.  You can't go wrong using these oils in any way, shape, or form.  That's for sure.  But to use them in place of medication, I'd be very hesitant and leery about doing that w/o the approval of my physician.

Good luck to you, Berneda!
